Has she inadvertently turned off the sound?
Check to see if orange is showing in the slot above the volume controls. (Off)
Slide it back to on.

In Settings>Sounds> The text tone is shown as tri-tone and also classic and makes a sound when I try it on her phone.
But if I send a message from my phone, she gets the message but no notification.
Anyone help with this mystery?
