Does it really natter where the file is? The only use is to restore from whole the file, correct?

If you are using a pc - make sure you have enabled "show hidden files, folders or drives" under organize folder options. The backup is in
C:/users/your user name/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer/MobileSync/Backup

All your apple devices will have backups located in this folder.
