I did use it but have forgotten why I quit; there was an issue. Do you think that is why my phone has this behavior?

I have an iPhone 5 updated to. 7.0.2 but it has always behaved this way even before the upgrade.
I read emails, deleting some, then more emails appear where I deleted and not at the top where you'd think new mail would appear.
I use Mail and gmail.
Then later I go to my computer and find older mail I never saw on the phone.
