Europe is more advanced as far as cell phones and service for the same.
There are a few pay as you go plans offered, but if you have a smart phone, they stick you with the data as part of the voice. Again, T-Mobile may be the one that does not, but I have not looked, I have only heard rumors.
I'd rather pay up front for the phone and get cheaper service costs and the ability to change carriers, over the most phones are subsidized and no discount on service once you pay off the phone.
And very expensive text plans in the US.
