Excuse me, I meant to say, why, most of us use it with no problem. Maybe there is something you are missing in IMAP.

I want my messages to be downloaded onto my computer and I will then deal with them or delete them.
When my desk computer wasn't working, I was only able to use my iPhone for email for a week or so before the messages filled the memory and email stopped working completely.

I switched from POP to IMAP 10 years ago when I got my 1st iPhone, because I wanted to be able to read my email on whichever (Macbook Pro or iPhone) was more convenient to me at the time – so I wanted my mail in synchrony on both devices.
I am on at least 17 mailing lists, but I don't keep all the messages.
On the one hand, since there is always a lot of stuff I'm either not interested in, or that consists of little more than one-word replies, I delete MUCH of the traffic after looking at it.
On the other hand, I periodically archive kept messages to separate folders on my Mac – which therefore do not appear on my iPhone at all any more.
I've never run out of space for my mail.
