Whats going on?
Is there a reasonable fix for this problem?
Or do I just have a defective phone?

My first question is whether or not you have another device, like an iPad, iPod Touch, or Mac, or 2nd iPhone, on this account that you could check the behavior on?

Do you have an iCloud account – you could go online to test whether Contacts works there.

I would try force-quitting the Contacts app, then restarting it; also try force-rebooting the iPhone.

Last resort would be deleting the Contacts app (if its data is backed up on iCloud), then re-installing it.

I don't know whether or not this actually happens, but I wonder if some entry is somehow corrupted.

lately I when I tap CONTACTS It opens normally but as soon as I try to do anything, such as search for a contact, create a new contact, anything , the app freezes.

Often as I start to type the name of the contact I want to find it might allow 2 or 3 letters then no more.

After that its frozen for what seems like several minutes, and then the app may or many not shut off on its own.

I can retry after shut off but same thing will happen

The ONLY remedy appears to be a complete phone shutdown and restart which obviously is a pain to do each time I want to access contacts.

Now after shutdown and restart it will work normally for a while but within the same day, hours later the issue will resurface.
