In August 2014 T-Mobile had a deal in which they would lend you an iPhone for a week to see how you liked it. At the time I was using a flip phone on a carrier that was going out of the cell phone business (Cincinnati Bell), so I leaped at the chance. I decided I really did like the iPhone, but, at least where I lived, T-Mobile's coverage was terrible. I almost never got any bars (actually dots with an iPhone) in my house. T-Mobile's subsequent announcement that they had a system to let you make calls over WiFi was indicative of that. I ended up with Verizon, and am happy. Right now, sitting in my bedroom, I have 3 out of 5 dots or -102. (I forget how to set this numerical display up; I did it quite a while ago.)

Someone else from the dark ages! I've been with AT&T since about 1985 (first phone was bolted into the trunk) through Cingular and the revival of the AT&T brand. I still have a legacy unlimited data account.
I like AT&T because I can get off a plane or a boat (I'm a yacht delivery skipper) anywhere in the world and the phone just works. My experience in the US (at least the watery bits) is that every cowpie has a Verizon tower; their coverage is the best. AT&T is getting pretty close and where there is coverage is definitely faster. T-Mobile and Sprint are pretty far behind. Of course if you don't travel a lot all you care about is coverage where you are.
It's always fun coming in from offshore with crew on various carriers holding up phones waiting for that first bar.
best, dave
