I also was with Cingular then AT&T from the acquisition / merger. I too had an unlimited plan and hated AT&T for harassing me for using about 3-4GB a month thought it was supposed to be unlimited.
It's interesting how I get a T-mobile signal in places I go to frequently which I could not with AT&T!!! Also I haven't had a problem with not having a signal anywhere I go. So I don't think they are behind at all.

Someone else from the dark ages! I've been with AT&T since about 1985 (first phone was bolted into the trunk) through Cingular and the revival of the AT&T brand. I still have a legacy unlimited data account.
I like AT&T because I can get off a plane or a boat (I'm a yacht delivery skipper) anywhere in the world and the phone just works. My experience in the US (at least the watery bits) is that every cowpie has a Verizon tower; their coverage is the best. AT&T is getting pretty close and where there is coverage is definitely faster. T-Mobile and Sprint are pretty far behind. Of course if you don't travel a lot all you care about is coverage where you are.
It's always fun coming in from offshore with crew on various carriers holding up phones waiting for that first bar.
best, dave
