The simplest thing might be to go into Settings – Mail, Contacts, Calendar, tap on the iCloud account, and simply turn Mail off.__._,_.__

Good idea, Jim. But it didn't change anything. The Activity window in Mail on my MBP still shows two or three animated, anoying boxes waiting for something to happen.
