Definitely sounds as if it's busy with something. Have you tried closing all apps (double tap "home" button, then swipe up on the app screen shots)?

My Dad's iPhone 5S is having some issues. The light shuts off. Doesn't react (immediately) to pressing any button. When I press the power button, doesn't light up. Then I press the home button, nothing happens. After around five seconds, it lights up then takes a screenshot. Then back to the same issue. I believe something's keeping it real busy in the background.
Doing a forced reboot (holding both power and home buttons for a few seconds) temporarily solves it. Comes back later in the day.
