Another bigger visual reminder which I found more obvious was to turn on the 'Subject Line' in the Settings area of iMessages. That's different enough from a regular text message that it will catch your eye easier than a little i.

Look in the area where you type the message. When you put in the person's name to set the destination phone number it will say iMessage in faint print if it will be sent as an iMessage and Text Message if it will be sent as a regular message.
