I hear ya! Under-employement sucks! Overdrive and my public library are my friends.
Find the book in iTunes, highlight all sections of it. Command + i, or Get Info. Option tab, and change the Media Kind to Audiobook or whatever is appropriate. The item will change Library, and you will have to change how it is synced to the iDevice. The next time you do, it will show as a Audiobook on the iDevice.

Most are not mb4 and need to be converted.
"Are you classifying them as "Books"? That's an option I don't remember seeing.

How are you storing your books in iTunes? Are you classifying them as "Books"? (I assume you're not getting these books from Audible, because my Audible books go automatically into the Books category. )
