And Sanjaya is getting a little dramatic. But yes, that means instead of having to buy 1 or 2 adapters, it sounds like he may have to buy 5 or 6. I would be a little upset if I were in his shoes, too. But this is not the first time, nor the last, that Apple changes something this basic.

Besides, any mini-USB connector should work to charge your iPhone/iPad. For Apple to make 2 iPhones or iPads would cost Apple more and I would guess prices would go up for the consumer.
