I am about to take the plunge for two iPhone X. Can they be ordered and picked up at the Apple Store? I can't check my store right now it is closed.

A small fraction of stores have had some iPhones X *in* the store. Most do not. There are about a half-dozen such stores at this moment in the entire US eastern seaboard.

Look here:

and click on "iPhone X" and "Retail".

Even the stores with stock are unlikely to have all carriers, both sizes and both colors.
