Ian, if the phone still has it's original battery, it could be the battery is faulty.

Subject: [apple-iphone] iPhone crashes when taking photographs.
My iPhone 5S occasionally crashes to a black screen which then shows an empty battery and a prompt to charge the 'phone. This occurs even when the iPhone was 100% charged before the crash.
Connecting to a charger and restarting restores normal working.
Has anyone experienced this? What is causing it and is there a solution?
