True.....  "flaky" does not help with diagnosis.

I DID "restore" the phone from the iTunes screen and it appears that it did install a new copy of iOS. First it downloaded a new copy of the current version of iOS into the Mac and then it installed it onto the phone.

"Flakey" doesn't provide much in the way of hooks to hang advice on.
