If I understand the WiFi software correctly, it tries to connect to the strongest signal first. If it cannot connect, for some reason, it goes on to the next available router.
If you had different security setup on each router, you could choose which one it would connect to. The way I see this working would be to remove the Verizon from your list of access points on your device. When it tried to connect to Verizon, it would fail because you would not have a saved password. It would then try the Apple router and you would get what you wanted.
This assumes that you do not have the Apple router setup as a repeater. If that is the case, this will not work because the Verizon router is still doing the security.
Many AC routers today have both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz on the same box. If you choose to setup different security passwords for each, you can then choose which one you get connected to. In my house, I get better coverage with the 2.4Ghz so it always connects first.
