Well I finally called Apple Support today. In addition to having me reset the network settings again, I was advised to shut off iMessage before doing the network reset. Once the reset was completed go back & turn on iMessage. As soon as I did that a slew of messages from the past week came through.

I wonder if its iOS related? Hard to know. If you get no relief from AT&T, maybe the next update will help. One can always hope.
If you have a apple store nearby, I'd see it there is any diagnostics they can run.
