Just to add: I forgot that you can use voice with these too.

Unless you actually need to be in voice contact, you can do something like this:-
1. Switch to Airplane Mode, if you didn't already do this on the plane (otherwise you would've switched the phone off). This disables all "radios".
2. As soon as you can access free Wi-Fi, switch your Wi-Fi back on (but leave Airplane Mode on). From now on, use only free Wi-Fi. 
3. If all your contacts are on iPhones, you can then send them messages, and even photos, for free using iMessage.
4. If they are not all on iPhones, you can do the same with WhatsApp. Obviously you will need to sign up, and get your friends to sign up, before you go. 
This requires *no* change of SIM (you won't be using it anyway!).
