I stumbled across a setting in iTunes 12 that made things a lot better from me. If you click on the 3 dots on the bar at the top and scroll to the bottom of the pull down menu, there is a button that says edit. When you click on edit it opens a check list of icons that can appear on the bar. I adjusted mine so I only have the icons I want.
