Re: [apple-iphone] iOS 8.1 ---

Just curious;  you state you "gave up to save your battery"....

I seem to recall that they suggest that the iPhone is connected to power to do the update....

Did you try it while it was plugged in?

If I were having your issues, I'd make sure all apps are closed, then restart the iPhone (hold power and home until Apple icon appears), verify all apps are still closed.

If the apps are not all closed, close the open apps again, and restart again.

(I've had that happen more than once; when I rebooted some apps were still open.)

THEN plug in to your charger and try to do the upgrade.

Hope this helps.

I do not think the update is defective as you say.  I think you have some kind of glitch that needs addressed first.   I updated my iPhone 6, my girlfriend's iPhone 5, my iPad mini, and her regular iPad with no issues at all.

Nope.  Hung up on accept terms and conditions for over 20 minutes.  I gave up to save my battery.  iPhone 5s with 64G only half full.  Defective update.  I hope they fix it - because I don't want to be stuck with unpatched iOS on my phone from now on.
