I've seen this on and off for maybe 4 years with 3 different model iPhones (less with my present 4S than earlier). I'm on AT&T.
I have never seen a satisfactory explanation.
You may find you can reconnect by turning Airplane Mode On, then Off, rather than turning the whole device off, then on.
