The iPhone and iPad chargers are of different physical sizes; the iPhone being smaller. The important difference is the wattage. The iPad 1 does 5 volts & 1 amp output for 5 watts. The iPad 3 does 5 volts & 2 amps for 10 watts (you can get by with 5 watts but charging takes forever). The iPhone needs 5 watts.
