I've been following this thread regarding a GPS and have used all the Apple
apps mentioned so far. Many of them are quite good but there is no way any
of them can hold up an outboard Garmin device for either a lot of driving or
distance driving. For example, if I am going a long distance, I can use
voice activation within the Garmin to look for the next or nearest gas
station, fast food, rest stop or just about anything a motorist would want.
It will then tell me how far these places are and what the direction is from
where I am currently at. Because it is dynamic, these data will change as I
continue to drive. I don't take my hands off the wheel and can make
corrections or change my mind at any time. Living in California and driving
almost every day, this device has routed me around traffic jams in Southern
California (I live in N. Cal.) and notified me of traffic accidents ahead.
Granted I'm using the most expensive one Garmin makes (3597LMTHD) but if you
do a lot of driving it will definitely give you peace of mind. Even their
$50 Apple app (Garmin U.S.A.) IMHO beats the cheaper and free maps. Because
this app has the entire USA loaded, there is no need for a data connection
so it will work in very remote locations.
