I've been following this thread regarding a GPS and have used all the Apple
  apps mentioned so far. Many of them are quite good but there is no way any
  of them can hold up an outboard Garmin device for either a lot of driving or
  distance driving. For example, if I am going a long distance, I can use
  voice activation within the Garmin to look for the next or nearest gas
  station, fast food, rest stop or just about anything a motorist would want.
  It will then tell me how far these places are and what the direction is from
  where I am currently at. Because it is dynamic, these data will change as I
  continue to drive. I don't take my hands off the wheel and can make
  corrections or change my mind at any time. Living in California and driving
  almost every day, this device has routed me around traffic jams in Southern
  California (I live in N. Cal.) and notified me of traffic accidents ahead.
  Granted I'm using the most expensive one Garmin makes (3597LMTHD) but if you
  do a lot of driving it will definitely give you peace of mind. Even their
  $50 Apple app (Garmin U.S.A.) IMHO beats the cheaper and free maps. Because
  this app has the entire USA loaded, there is no need for a data connection
  so it will work in very remote locations.
