Has anyone that is saying to use something besides Quicken actually used the
totally updated 2018 version? I know the older ones were not great, but from
reading and watching some things, 2018 looks pretty nice.

I would switch to Moneydance in a heartbeat if they'd just add the capability to hide various accounts. I have some I rarely and/or no longer use, and I like to keep them out of sight for simplicity's sake. Quicken allows me to do that..
