Things I can think of:
You may have some app use Location Services to a great extent (especially GPS). Check the apps you haven't actively closed (by swiping them up in the task manager screen, or whatever its name) against the apps allowed to use Location Services.
Your iPhone may be seeking a wifi network that it can access. I could see this as a likely cause, especially with a new device. Provide it with the keys to your home and work networks, or whatever. Having a poor connection to the only available wifi network could (as I assume) also be to blame.
You may have some app fetching quite some advertisements. If you use apps that provide in-app purchases to stop them showing ads, restore those purchases.
Me, I was about to abandon my Android devices for their useless battery life. I caught some ad addicts and I forced Facebook to stop. (I'm not on social media.) Now their battery life nears that of my iOS devices. I often use Location Services, so that is not where I can save power. I can afford to ignore wifi networks, due to my mobile data plans. I think that it helps.

Have you tried the highest rated email app?
With 4.5 stars in iTunes, the Yahoo Mail app is the highest rated email app on the market. What are you waiting for? Now you can access all your inboxes (Gmail, Outlook, AOL and more) in one place. Never delete an email again with 1000GB of free cloud storage.
