The appropriate amount of protection for your device is probably related to the risks that you expose it to.
I have been carrying an iPhone in my left front trousers pocket for about four years without scratching the unprotected screen. The secret? Things that can cause scratches do not go in my left front trousers pocket.
Most of the time the phone has a minimal bumper case that just goes around its outside edges and corners. That makes it less slippery to hold and protects against drops.

If you're considering an X I would suggest 1. A Descent Case (Amazon,Best Buy, Ebay) 2. Screen Protector is a MUST, again I'd Suggest ZAGG Sapphire Cover as I have one on mine and My father who just bought one Monday applied one to his. The Phone is Literally ALL Screen so it makes sense to protect the Screen at all cost with some sort of Screen protect and not investing in one of those $20 cheap ones. The Phone $1k so you should invest at least SOME money towards it.
