Re: [apple-iphone] No Audio of Driving Instructions from Google Maps or Apple Maps

Mike,

I posted this problem here a few days ago regarding my daughter's Hyundai Sonata.  I was having a similar problem with a Toyota model that I was able to overcome, at least for Google Maps (have yet to check with Apple Maps).

I got it to work in my car by making sure that the car entertainment system had selected Blue Tooth as it's source.  For my car, I can select AM, FM, iPod, USB or BT.  The issue, I think is not that the audio fails outside your home network but that the car system may be looking for the sound from something other than a BT source.  The odd part of this, of course, is that the phone system in your and my car immediately recognizes a BT source for making calls.  I suspect these two systems, Calls vs Entertainment system, aren't one and the same and have to be directed independently.

At least, this works for my car.

One more important issue.

If I plug my iPhone into the USB connector in my car (as opposed to the cigarette lighter with a USB adapter inserted, which I do), the car entertainment system switches from BT (which I had selected) to USB and the voice directions again disappear.  If I charge the iPhone using the cig lighter, this doesn't happen.

In summary, I suspect some car systems are still a mess when it comes to working with these various inputs (phone, vs. music, vs. maps, etc).

I've posted the following in the Apple Communities for iPhone and gotten no replies:

___________________________________________

"iPhone 6, iOS 10.1.1,
I'm in the US with Verizon as my carrier,
Siri is 'on', Location services is 'on',
Maps and Google Maps are both set to use location 'while using' app,
Driving & Navigation voice volume is set for normal volume.

I cannot get turn-by-turn navigation either from the phone speaker or my car (Camry XLE) speakers.

[Note that a few OSs ago I was getting audio navigation instruction through the car speakers.  Then, as I recall, the 'secret sauce' for navigation sounds was clicking on a speaker symbol on the bottom of the screen, but no speaker icon is there now]"

Yesterday, while not in my car and prior to taking a trip, I defined the start and destination locations in Google Maps.  The phone speaker audibly began to give me the first few driving instructions. Then, leaving the phone on, I got into the car, started it and began driving.  Although the map on the phone traced the route, I got not a sound from the phone or the car speakers.  The only things different from the last time I successfully used this were at least one update to the phone OS and, possibly, and update to the Google Maps app.

The iOS 10 iPhone User Guide says:
"Note: To get directions, iPhone must be connected to the Internet. To get directions involving your current location, Location Services must also be on. (See also Location Services.)"

It appears as though when I'm at home, within range of my network, the audio works, but outside the network it fails.  If I need to be within range of a wi-fi hotspot to use this function it is worthless.  What am I missing?

Thanks,
.................Mike
