My car charger just gave up the ghost.  I investigated the connections in my '15 Subaru Forester and found a USB slot.  I tried connecting my 5S with a USB- Lightening cable and it seems to be charging.

Is there any advantage to replacing the charger which plugged in to the 12 volt slot vs using the USB to charge my phone or Air 2?

Generally we have no idea how much power is available at the USB port on cars. If it is primarily intended as a data-tranfer method (playing music on the car's sound system), it might only trickle-charge the device at a slow rate.

A *good* "cigar lighter" charger should charge an iDevice at it's max rate — and, thankfully, the good ones *tell* you what they are capable of.

Also, I've read that using the phone while it is charging is bad for the battery.  This sounds wrong to me and would make battery-sucking long-distance navigation a big problem.  True or false?

I have in the past used iPhones running TomTom navigation, and music or podcast playing, leaving them plugged in continuously for hours and hours without problems.
