Hello all,
After sixteen years, the time has come to close down the MacBook Yahoo Group. This is not a sad time. Things simply change.
- Group traffic has dropped in the last 3 years, and when we do get posts, they're often general macOS questions and not MacBook specific. Maybe there are fewer problems to solve? :) It's not just this group. I don't think I've seen posts from nearly any Yahoo Groups lately.
- The last facelift of Groups looks pretty, but has left the admin side broken, especially anti-spam moderation.
- The new Yahoo has been shutting down features left and right, and it's not clear if Groups has a future.
- Yahoo's own future is in flux. Will they be purchased by Verizon or AT&T in the next few weeks, or even some no-name investment group, and do we want them to control this group?
- Social media has taken the place of many online forums.
I want to close this group on our own terms, with plenty of time to discuss alternatives. Here are some of my go-to sources for solutions when I run into trouble.
- Google — (Duh.) But it works surprisingly well to copy-paste an entire error phrase into a search.
- Apple Support Communities (formerly Discussions) — Forums hosted by Apple, but it's mostly users helping other users. It can be busy, but there's often very deep insight happening here. https://discussions.apple.com/
- MacRumors Forums — It's not just for rumors. This is one of the few online forums that still thrives, and it can be very helpful. http://forums.macrumors.com
- macOS Audio — For audio production and music making, everyone is most welcome! (Formerly OSXAudio.com, The Big Blue Lounge, and until yesterday, Mac OS X Audio. I own and run the place now.) http://www.macosaudio.com/
- Social Media — I know I field questions on Twitter and Facebook all the time.
Can anyone recommend anything else? Are there any Facebook Groups that are favorites?
I want to personally thank all 2000+ members for signing up and participating for all these years.
