Apparently, I missed the critical sentence, "the computer got wiped".
Go check out an app called PhoneView from ecamm.com. You might have to drop them an email, because it does not specifically say it will work with an iPod, but it does work with iOS.
Phoneviewer allows you to copy back to a Mac. $30
Or look at Senti, which I used once to do just what you are trying to do.
