Sounds to me like the base may be blocking the signal, just like
they do in some hospitals.

my boy was in north carolina this past year in the military with
his iphone (verizon)..no problems..now he just got stationed in
Kaneohoe Bay Hawaii ,very close to Honolulu ..he has 4 bars but no
3g and sometimes no edge..I looked at the coverage map and it
shows great coverage for both data and phone.
Im wondering if there may be some settings he has to change to
get the 3g working .
