I just guess that they fixed it on iOS 5 since it comes from factory with
volume buttons to take picture. Would be funny if you use a default way
(buttons) of iOS 5 to take pictures and they come up the wrong way!
Since the iphone has a big screen and you can take pictures anyway you like,
different from a regular camera which you will probabily never never use it
upside down, iOS should have the option to lock the camera orientation, for
even those who like to take pictures using the regular way (touching the
screen) with the right thumb or the left thumb...
The funny part is when you view the iphone they all show the right position
(up) regardless of the orientation you took the shot.
I´ve tested it several times. The shutter screen button must be on the right
for pictures or movies so they can come a normal landscape shot. All other
positions the results will be according to the orientation you used. There
is no a "auto correction" feature. Unless you view on the phone or use
quicktime to view the movies.
Must be some gyroscope data built in to the pictures/movies cameras but they
should have an option to "fix" the orientation after or have an "autofix"
option based on the orientation you shot.
I think it is an iOS fault and from now on I must remember to always keep
the home button to the right when filming or taking pictures.

Rod, I just took a photo with Camera+ and opened with Windows 7. It was not
upside down. I have a 4s with iOS 5.0.1.
