I haven't had any problems upgrading to iOS 5 on my iPhone 4. I was a beta tester for it, so couldn't wait to upgrade to the full version. As everyone already said, backup before you upgrade just in case you have problems. I doubt you'l have trouble upgrading. In fact, I think you'll like it better than what you're using now. The notifications are unobtrusive now. That's one of the best things about upgrading. No more having your apps stop when a message comes in.
