They must have fixed on iOS 5...

If you want to, just for fun of it, take 4 pictures, starting with home
button on the right and go clockwise and mail them to me...

I have some here I can send you if you want...

Remember that on the iphone they always come up right, regardless the
orientation you use.

Rod, I just turned my iPhone upside down and hit the volume button with my
left thumb. The photo still came out right side up. Again, this is a 4s
with iOS 5.0.1. I'm not saying this will fix your problem but only that I
don't have the problem.
