Thanks for all the help with this problem. It was simply having
notifications turned on in too many apps. So I turned off notification in
everything. I'll turn it on anytime I need it for a specific app.

Also, I turned off everything running in the background using the
double-click on the home button. Looks as if I probably didn't need a new
iPhone (except for the new technology)! Oh, well.
