I would start by restarting both the phone and computer. If that doesn't fix the problem, try a new cable.

I don't know why
I get a pop up on the MacBook saying that iTunes could not back up the phone because the iPhone disconnected
however in actual practice is no such thing ever happened
the connection lead is in place as always
what on earth is happening?
