But USB optical drives are cheap, and work fine.
And regular backups of one's computer(s) mean that the data can be restored to a new one in the event of theft or hard-drive failure (assuming the backup drives are not also stolen, of course).
I wonder about the other stuff on the stolen computers: what about photos, spreadsheets, etc? Are they lost forever?
