Yes, the contact screen is what you see when you select contacts by touching the contacts icon and then the 'contact' you want to use. In your case, your daughter. Now, when her contact information is showing on your iphone, you may have to go down a bit to see the words 'send a message'. When you see those words, touch that area and it should bring up a message area, where you type in what you wish to say, then touch SEND in the top right hand corner of this screen and off goes the text message.
I suspect you are simply attempting to go about the same thing in a slightly different way. However, I can assure you sending messages from an iPhone 4s to a cell phone that uses the Android OS performs perfectly.
I don't really know about what model I would choose if changing phones. I'm not a heavy phone user but if I had to choose another phone, I'd probably consider one with a larger screen. If your wife likes the big screen, then certainly she would most likely prefer the iPhone 6+ if she was to use an iPhone. If the kids have her on their plan now, can you not simply remove your wife from your plan and continue on as is?
