Re: [apple-iphone] An iPhone for my wife?

If you don't have a texting plan, you can get an app like Textplus that gives you a dedicated number from which you can text for free. I use it - works great over wifi or cellular. There are other apps as well. ( I am on an old AT&T plan with 'unlimited' data that dropped the $5 limited texting. I don't text much. The only other option was $30/ month for unlimited which was much more than I needed.)

You can text from the iPhone to non iPhone users assuming that you have a texting plan that you signed up from AT&T?  Even if you don't have a texting plan iOS gives you the ability to send iMessages (texts) to other iOS devices (iphones, Macs, and iPads) who have signed up for iMessage.  However these texts will not go to other phone users.  To do that you need a texting plan.

Assuming you have a texting plan, then go to Settings:  Messages (it's on the 4th block down).    The 3rd selection says Send as SMS - make sure the switch is enabled.   Further go down to where it says MMS and Group Messaging - turn these on if you want to be able to send pictures or text a group.

Let us know if that works.

[apple-iphone] Re: Using Verizon iPhone on AT&T?

Based on the Cellular and Wireless section at http://support.apple.com/kb/SP655 it appears that the there are enough differences in the frequencies that a Verizon iPhone 5 would not work on ATT.

However, if it was a iPhone 5s it would work because the Verizon iPhone 5s has all the frequencies that the ATT iPhone 5s has plus the Verizon phone has the CDMA frequencies.

I am using a Verizon iPhone 5s on TMobile.

[apple-iphone] What is contained in "Other" Storage?

When I look at my iPhone in iTunes, I see that I have different kinds of things in there taking up space including Apps and Photos and such.

One of the categories is "Other"...  can anyone suggest to me what might be in there and how to control its size???

Any suggestions appreciated...

Happy New Year

Re: [apple-iphone] Using Verizon iPhone on AT&T?

A friend wants to give me his old iPhone 5. He's a Verizon subscriber, and I'm an AT&T subscriber.

I know AT&T and Verizon use different network technology. Can I still use this iPhone on AT&T, and if so does it first need some hardware changes?
David

As of the iPhone 5, the Verizon iPhones were still physically different models that can NOT work on the ATT network. A completely different Broadcom cellular chip. I seriously doubt it could be changed.

Re: [apple-iphone] New iPad mini, no phone number in contacts

Were you syncing with iCloud?  Check your contacts and see if phone numbers are listed?  If no Contacts, likely that you need to turn on Contact syncing from iCloud settings on iPad Mini.

Altho their website advertises that all kinds of content can be backed up to your computer (or transferred to another phone) when I attached an iPhone 6, from the long list of possible file types only apps, photos, music, videos and books were checked as possible file types to back up.

Text messages and call logs were listed as NOT files types that could be backed up.

Notes and book marks were not selectable either.

To back up Contacts, it's necessary to first disable iCloud syncing.

I've been using it for a iPod but I'd like to get them all on my current phone. Thanks Mike
