Bruce and Brent,
I know you want to convince the OP to get another model, but read the subject line, "my first and only smart phone". Yes, he might be better off with a newer model, but the 4 is not that much better. And we all forgot to mention that other than Tmobile, he may have to sign a 2 year contract. Yes, AT&T is talking about allowing the iPhone on the pay as you go plan, GoPhone, but I think I remember some sever limits on the data plans there.
While the 3G is very dated, since it can not be upgraded past iOS 4.2.1, the 3GS is not that dated. It can use the current iOS 6.1.3, and the camera is not that bad, not is it that slow. I was using a 3GS for QR and barcode scanning 11 months ago. Not always smoothly, but workable.
I just want to know where Paul is finding garage sales with lots of UPCs. None that I have gone to had any. But there are apps that will search Amazon and provide UPCs, but by that time you already have a suggested price.
Paul,
Again, can you justify $60 or more a month, and probably with a 2 year contract. And don't forget to check the coverage area, outside your normal, if you plan on traveling for work or pleasure. Just take into consideration how much you travel. I used to travel a lot for work, so it was a big factor.

Another poster asked about the 3G vs. 3Gs - it is important. I don't believe Verizon had the iPhone in the iPhone 3 era, so you probably have a SIM card and are limited to ATT. But I may be mistaken - it shouldn't cause an issue for you, though, except occasionally the darn things get slightly unseated and you get the "cannot find sim card" error. Or some such wording.
You will need a data plan to use the advanced features of the phone like internet access.
The 3's are getting a bit dated in technology - I am not sure if the latest operating systems work on them or not, but you may not want to update your operating system when prompted - it may slow your phone to a crawl because the older processors can't handle the processing power required. There may be some apps that won't run unless you update the operating system, so it is your choice.
Specifically, you will need to download the ebay and amazon apps. If you want to read UPC's you probably need an app for that. The camera in the 3 is not nearly as good as in newer phones.
At some point, you may be asked if you want to do an "upgrade". If you want to upgrade to a much better camera, you need to do it before August because a patent dispute is forcing Apple to take the 4 and 4S off the market after August.
