Re: [apple-iphone] Help with spam calls

There are only 3 ways spammers will call you. They use a robo-caller that will call every number in a given area, one after the other in order. They buy a list of number from another spammer or direct marketing company. Direct Marketing companies buy lots of list from government through the Freedom of Information Act, from the DMV, USPS (change of address), Voter Registratar, etc.

Or you gave your number to them, through a raffle, survey, warranty card, loyalty card, coupon, rebate, etc. Yeah, the rebate needs your address to mail you the check or whatever, but why do they need your phone number? And now you have just sold your contact information for a buck.

I wrote the list about DoNotCall.gov early in this thread, but it did not make the list for some reason. The Federal program can only be used for private numbers, but not business numbers. If you have done business with the calling company, they can call you until you tell them to stop, and that you are on the DoNotCall list. Charities and surveys are exempt from the program. I don't know about New York state, but legitimate charities are exempt under the Federal program. If the charity is not legitimate, then the state can pursue it under other consumer protection laws. I just did a quick look at the NY program and they have deferred to the Federal program.

I had a lot of problems in the past few years with spam calls on my home phone (which is why I did not want to rely totally on a cell phone.) To make a long story short I eventually got a new number and unlisted my phone.
However I also wrote congressman several times. Recently I got a call from someone in the government involved with these calls. I hope I wrote down her number, but have no idea right now where. She said that if you are on the do not call list, home phone or not, report the number to (I think) the do not call list. She said they well procecute even if they are charities, but that is more difficult, especially if she has a lot of complaints. Actually I remember she called me because she got a lot of complaints about a number I had complained about. She said they are WAY BEHIND because of the lack of staff members, but still her office is trying to prevent these spam calls (at least for New York State.)

As for my cell phone, I do not get many at all..once in a while. Sometimes I pick them up and get the LONG recording but at the end it asks press such and such a number to be taken off their call list, which I do. Same with texts I get, if they are spam calls or unsolicited calls I write STOP in the reply and I have to say I have not gotten a spam text or call on my iphone in some time, but then as I said, I don't use my iphone for too many calls. If I am home I use my landline phone. My husband uses his iphone more than I do and he has gotten more spam time calls and tests than I do. He just ignores them.
