Those are great for avoiding __ repeat__ calls from unsolicited marketers and charities, but they do noting to stop the first call.

You know what I do for people, charities or businesses, that I am not certain of? I either I don't give them a number, or if they are insistent, I give them the number for information, (area code)-555-1212. And the only insistence I can not get around is a web form. BTW you can use my address, 123 Any St, My Town, (state) and a zip code like 94111 ( that matches the state). I have yet to find a web page that will not accept those.

I aso have some home phones that have a blocking feature on it up to 20 numbers. Problem I had was when
the calls generated bogus computer numbers so no two were ever the same. That has ended since I changed my number and unlisted my phone.

Some phone systems and I have mind with time warner cable has a place on their site to block 20 numbers-no additional charge so with the 20 there and the 20 on my phone I could block up to 40.

Another trick I've used is creating a contact (I call it Whoo Knows) with a silent ringtone. I've added a lot of phone numbers to that contact. The phone doesn't ring if any of those numbers call, and the caller ID if I see it show up on screen tells me it's not a call I need worry about answering. They never leave messages so I doubt they were important anyway.
