The sync doesn't have to be with the Exchange server. It could be that the app copies a list of the contacts that make up the group to the iphone and that list is synced up to the icloud. I'm looking for a way to make groups out of my contacts and if I lose my phone and have to buy a new one, I can resync instead of spending hours/days trying to recreate my groups.
