Problem solved after talking to a friend, but leaving this message here in case it's helpful. I have never yet slid the ring silencing switch to off on my phone. In fact, it's hidden behind a flap on my protective case, and I've never even opened that flap to do anything with that switch. The switch is above the two volume buttons. It's a mystery how I could have activated the switch without having gone behind the little flap to do so. ARGH. Technology will drive us nuts.
