I don't use iCloud or have a iCloud email address, and I use "Find My friends" app!
But I am sure you and your Wife will have to have your own apple ID to use it!!

it works based on your iCloud email address which should be unique for you and your wife. That's what we do in our house. We all use my apple id for apps, music, etc. But all 5 iphones have different icloud ID's for email and that's how you can use Find My Friends or Find My iPhone.
