[apple-iphone] activation needed message

 

Lately my iPhone 4 running OS 5 (haven't upgraded yet) has been giving me a message "activation needed" on start up and then says it needs to be connected to iTunes.

When I connect to the computer I'm told that it needs to be restored and all my data will be lost.

There are a bunch of voice memos on it that I don't want to lose but they won't sync to my computer. Have already tried everything on the apple support site and other places that I've googled this week, and this isn't the issue that I want to solve right now, although if anyone knows a sure-fire fix for that I'd be open to knowing!

This phone is a replacement that Apple gave me because my original iPhone 4 had problems.

Any idea what is going on? Is my phone about to die?
