Just a clarification.
RAM is the 'short term' memory capacity of the device and determines the speed of the device's action such as loading/unloading apps. That is the simplistic definition. Which is why users of large computers [desktops, laptops], in contrast to iGadgets, often increase their RAM capacity to speed up the computer's operation.
The 16 GB, 32GB or 64GB size of the iPhone, and iPad etc, is the size of the capacity of the iPhone in terms of how many GB of music, apps, videos, etc you can load onto the phone.
The purchaser can decide on the capacity size of the phone before purchase. But the purchaser has no say in the size of the RAM built into the phone. Apple has always been very secretive about the RAM size and if you examine Apple's website for the tech specs of the iPhone you will not find any mention of RAM size. Of course the geeks who take apart, literally and figuratively, the iPhone are able to determine the RAM size. Unlike the larger computers the iPhone's RAM is not expandable.
The iPhone 5 has 1GB RAM, the iPhone 4 and 4S has 512GB RAM. The iPhone 5 has a much faster chip than its predecessors which is one reason for the increase in RAM size. And this is why the user will notice a much faster operation of the 5 than the 4.
I hope this brief summary explanation is not seen as condescending or patronising to those of you who are geeks, it is not meant to be. It is just that the RAM and physical memory[capacity] sizes of the phones and pads sometimes gets confused and I have often seen instances of this in discussion forums such as this good one.
