Face ID works perfectly with me on an Phone XS. It does recognize me in half light with glasses on, but it won't recognize me with a fleece cap across my forehead and ears.

It recognizes me with the stocking cap, if there is about 2 fingers width between my eyebrows and the edge of the cap.

If the cap is right down to my eyebrows, it fails.

I wonder if changes in make-up or in hair-do (yes or no covering forehead or ears, coloring), perhaps in ear jewelry worn could cause the difference.

Apparently, growing a beard (i.e., slow change) does not interfere with FaceID, but if it learned you when you had a full beard, then shaved it off, it would be ore likely to have trouble.
