Unless another member has a better suggestion, I would call Apple Support (1-800-275-2273).  I have an iPhone X and two new iPad Pros all with Face ID.  It works about 99% of the time on all three devices running current software.

Face ID seems to work about 40 percent of the time for me. I have an XSMax. I have rebooted, set up new FaceID recordings, but nothing seems to make a difference. When I first got this phone (launch day) I thought it worked incredibly well. Maybe only one out of 50 times or more would I have to enter the code to access by phone. I want to say the problem started about the time of the last update, but it could've been before that. Ideas? Tips? Thanks.
